What is school social work?
School social work is a child and youth welfare service that is characterized by its presence and low-threshold accessibility in everyday school life. The focus is on accompanying and supporting children and young people in coping with their lives.
Main focus of school social work at the Freie Waldorfschule Dresden
1. psychosocial support and crisis intervention
- Support for children, young people and families in crisis situations (e.g. mental illness, suicidal thoughts, domestic violence, abuse, substance abuse).
- Advice on topics such as anxiety, psychological stress, sexualized violence and mental illness among parents/guardians.
- Support for pupils with panic attacks, school anxiety or other fears.
- Advice for parents in challenging parenting conversations, support with parenting.
- Referral to support services (e.g. psychotherapists, ASD, tutoring, occupational therapy).
- Support for transgender children and families, sensitization of teachers.
2. child protection and early help
- Support and advice in the event of suspected child endangerment, including risk assessment and support in taking action.
- Contact person for teachers, staff and parents on the subject of child protection.
- Early support for children and families to prevent risks.
3. conflict resolution and mediation
- Moderation of conflicts between pupils or pupils and teachers.
- Conflict prevention and mediation in individual or group settings.
- Implementation of experiential education units (e.g. dealing with stress, conflict management, anti-aggression training).
- Break-time projects for groups with increased conflict potential.
4. support with school and social challenges
- Advice and support, e.g. in finding topics/writing annual papers.
- Support in finding individual learning strategies.
- Advice on inclusion issues, especially ADHD and support for pupils with special needs.
- Support for DaZ (German as a second language) pupils, including help with applications (e.g. education and participation) and accompaniment to tutoring services.
5. promotion of student involvement and participation
- Promoting student participation in the student council and in school projects.
- Contact person for pupils with their own project ideas and support in their implementation (e.g. period product baskets).
6. networking and concept development
- Participation in school social work committees, networking with youth welfare organizations.
- Involvement in the development of school concepts and participation in planning conferences in order to place the needs and issues of young people.
7. prevention and education
- Lessons on addiction prevention, stress management and conflict resolution.
- Anti-aggression training in groups and individual settings.
