Measures for more sustainability

(1) Use of renewable energies

Solar systems, DREWAG Dresdner.Strom.Natur

House A: 1-kW system since 2001, expansion under review
House B: 87-kW system with 65-kW buffer storage for own use since 2022
2 x e-charging stations (egNEOS, Stauffenbergallee parking lot)

(2) Rainwater utilization

The first cistern for using rainwater was built back in 2000 as part of a school project (cherry tree meadow in front of House C). Step by step and where possible, we have extended the integration. The aim is to use most of the rainwater and to allow any rainwater that is not used to seep into the groundwater on the site.

Our concrete measures:

  • Cistern in the meadow in front of House C (since 2000): filled from the front of House C, lawn watering via manual extraction using an electric pump.
The overflow seeps into a small pit in the sand on the sports field.
  • Cistern in the courtyard at Marienallee 5 (since 2006): filled from the roof and path areas of House B for watering the school garden at Marienallee 5.
  • Rainwater barrels next to House I (gymnasium): 2 x 3000 liters for watering the school garden

(3) Rainwater infiltration

House B / House H (courtyard): since 2014, seven soakaways have prevented soil erosion in the direction of the sloping terrain towards Prießnitzpark and drainage into the sewer system. The excess, unused rainwater seeps through the natural sands into the groundwater on the school grounds.

(4) Ecological building

If you design a new school today (cf. the New Waldorf School in Dresden), in which both the people and the building structures have yet to be added, you have fundamentally made a serious mistake if ecological aspects are not taken into account both conceptually and in the actual implementation.

In the case of existing buildings, this cannot be implemented immediately and so consistently. The old buildings on the site (houses A, B, H, F, I) date back to the 19th century. They were built under different conditions and the use of space (e.g. cellars and attics) was completely different. However, the "reuse" of these buildings has a high ecological value, especially as building materials, including gravel and sand, are becoming increasingly scarce and their extraction is destroying the landscape.

Our concrete measures:

  • House A, C, G, H, Übschule: Roof insulation with blow-in materials made from renewable raw materials (isofloc© or similar)
  • House C: Interior wall insulation with cork
  • Paints: Use of ecological glazes
  • Floor coverings: Parquet floors sanded, oiled, not varnished, use of natural cork / linoleum (100% from organic / mineral raw materials) for new installations (from 1994)

(5) Heating / heating control

Our specific measures:

  • House A: Replacement of gas boiler, hydraulic balancing (optimized coordination of the heating system: radiators, thermostatic valves, pumps, pipes), preparation for the use of heat pumps, dismantling of the central water heating system (2023)
  • House B: wood chip firing system since 2006, supplied by local producer (waste wood from Saxony and Brandenburg)
  • House B (connector): Regulation of the room climate via automatic window control and underfloor heating
  • House C (wall heating), D, E, H: individual room/utility unit control

(6) Energy saving

In connection with soundproofing measures in the classrooms or the installation of false ceilings in the corridors as well as general refurbishments, LED lighting has been installed since 2017. In future, motion detectors will also help to illuminate the corridors in a more energy-efficient way.

Our specific measures:

  • Windows (all buildings, gradual implementation in connection with major renovation measures): Installation of wooden windows with thermal glazing, some with additional solar control glazing
  • Lighting (all buildings, gradually): Conversion to LED light sources, reduction in energy consumption to approx. 33% compared to 2000.

(7) Value retention

Our concrete measures:

  • House A, Übschule: Refurbishment of the old double-leaf entrance doors
  • House A, B: Replacement of the existing plastic windows only when uneconomical, despite visual "losses"

(8) Mobility

Our concrete measures:

  • Germany / DVB job ticket:
subsidized with €46.55/month (total subsidy: 79% of €63.00,
    own contribution: €13.30)
  • Business customer with teilAuto (car sharing) for business trips
  • 2 teilAuto car sharing parking spaces on the school grounds (Stauffenbergallee parking lot)
